Land line phone service
Do you pay less than $32/month for local phone service in somerville? If so, who are you with?

This feels really outrageously costly.

I'm kind of mad at Verizon right now for phoning me with a robo caller. I'm also mad at the whole nickle and diming the bill up. It's completely stupid, but my understanding is it's par for the course.

Yes. We have measured service from Verizon with no features. It costs about $20/month plus the cost of the calls (most months in the $3-$6 range; most of the phone calling is by our replay).

We also have the minimum service from VZ, and make basically no calls on it. By the time you add on all the fees, taxes, fee taxes, tax fees, fee surcharge tax fee franchise charge recovery tax taxes, and so on, the nominal charge of $7 is more like $25.

We have the measured Verizon as well, with similar results. I haven't been able to find anything cheaper, unless I'm willing to go to sketchy voip.

Verizon: $70-80/month for phone and internet plus $40-45/month on a separate bill for the cell. Sorry!

(Having two separate bills makes my accounting at least 50% easier.)

My RCN service is Phone+FastInternet+Cable+MostPremiumChannels for $99/month+taxes locked in for two years, although I switched to that a year ago. Their phone service works well enough and has free long distance. (I finally went that route after deciding that it wasn't worth spending $30/mo for a copper phone line plus ~$5/mo on long-distance.)
They seem incompetent but vaguely well-intentioned (with the exception of encrypting most of their channels now).

I forgot to mention, this morning, that mine is measured too. I get an allowance (I pay this fee in the bill) for the first $4 in calls being "free" (I never consume this allowance) then pay by the minute thereafter.

The phone line that came in my RCN bundle is priced at around $23, but there's another $7 in taxes and fees. Of course, the same bundle without the phone line is only like $12 cheaper, so I feel like I'm only paying $12 for a phone I never use.

Do you use your landline?

I realize this isn't directly applicable, but I haven't had a land line phone for six years now, and I've never missed it once.

I have Vonage as my home phone, with the 500 mins/mo plan. I've never had a bill over $20 -- but it does require an existing Internet connection. I've had minimal trouble with phone service (always involving no more than a reset of the Internet-to-phone box) in the 3.5 years I've been using it.
