It helps that I had low expectations, and I watched greg play the video game prequel, but...  
pitch black was kind of fun. It was all about lighting, contrast and grey characters. Crappy special effects and a few stupid bits, but hey, I had low expectations.

And damn, Vin Disel has a cool voice.

Yeah, I liked it! Flashback to a 1950's low budget horror movie where they couldn't afford a good monster suit, so they built atmosphere with shadows and implication. It had a great sense of creeping dread that you don't get with most current gore-in-your-face movies nowadays.

Compare the 1951 The Thing with the 1982 John Carpenter remake, for example. "Pitch Black" was much more in the first camp.
