I need a cane
I need a cane. Since I already have on occation have knee problems, unless I die an early death, I will need a cane on a regular basis someday. I would like that cane to be stylish, distinctive and quirky. I figured maybe I should start looking now, since canes aren't the most common things to see for sale. I was curious if anyone had any idea what sort of things I should look form. Sadly sword canes are illegal in Mass. any many other states.

EDIT: if I figured out what I wanted, I could even try to make it myself.

EDIT: This is always a possiblity. Though $400 is too much.

Mom has had a stick or 2 made for her by various crafters. I think you have a good idea there.

Finding a cane
Since you have plenty of time, try looking at some place like King Richard's Faire, or around the SCA. You'd be surprised the interesting things you can find there.

On the other hand: so what if sword canes are illegal? Isn't the point that nobody _knows_?

I would definitely start looking at RenFaires. I'm pretty sure I've seen some of the vendors who make walking sticks also make canes, with spiffy carved wood bits and cast metal tops in the shape of dragon heads and the like.

If you don't mind spending some extra money and getting something spiffy and custom I highly recommend http://honecksculpture.com/ - that's the guy who made my custom dolphin hood ornament for Ecco. I've not seen him do a cane but I have seen walking sticks and I'm sure he could adapt something into a cane. He frequents Arisia and other cons in the area.

Heh. My first thought was also "sword cane!"
until you pointed out the legality.
I wonder if you can get a concealed weapons
permit for one... ;)

Making one sounds like something
you should do, though!

Or would you possibly want something more glam? tulpaspin has (or had) a really lovely purple cane with a claw on top holding a fiber-optic sphere... dunno where he got it.

This link recently got posted in the journal of a friend you don't know:
There are some pretty though not astonishing canes there for fairly inexpensive.

Right now the classes are on "start any time" rotations, but Mark, the fab-tab-oulous teach, is in japane for the next two weeks.

I'm hoping I'll be moved up to the next class soon as well, but that's still yet to be seen.
