How do normal people do it?
When you are in the situation where there is something you would like to do, but you're not sure you can do it with the quality that the situation warrents, what do you do? Do it anyway and wait for someone to tell you you're not good enough to be doing it? Not do it anyway? Ask for an opinion? Something else?

EDIT: I feel like it seems like I'm shooting down's people's comments. I'm trying to understand how things are different, not trying to shoot them down.

I wouldn't go so far as to call myself a normal person...
If there is someone you trust, then ask for their opinion. If they don't give you a straight answer, do what you would like to do. Are the negative consequences on yourself and your taiko group worse if you don't play at all, or if you play badly?

In my experience, I find that many people would rather simply criticize someone's way of doing something than are willing to actually do the thing. If you are interacting with those people, then you should just not listen to them - they are not actually improving the situation by making you feel bad.
