"What do you *do*?
I need an answer to the "What do you do?" question that doesn't make me feel like crap afterwards.

Here's my suggestion:

"What I do is very complicated and sensitive, so pardon me if I gloss over parts. While giving off the outward appearance of your standard, average, everyday geek/musician/art type, I actually run an underground multinational organization which has thus far only carefully divulges its identity to those who our marketing seeks out and knows to require our services. This year, we saw great increases in our e-commerce transactions and developed a large following on various popular peer Web 2.0 sites. We're really looking forward to the end of this quarter and how it compares with our projections.

I'd give you one of my business cards, but we're actually redesigning them right now.

So what do *you* do?"

Damn. "Divulged". Oh well. I was rushed.

I was hoping for a non-fiction answer.

That's mostly true. I think it could be restated such that it's only stretching the truth. As I said, I was a bit rushed.

And shoot -- that's what it takes to sound impressive. Works wonders on resumes, after all. 8)

I think what it really comes down to is what do you want to accomplish that you're ashamed that you haven't done yet?

I realize this may be unhelpful, but I'm not sure how many other people have good answers to that question. I don't.

Oh, sure, I have an answer to "what is my day job", and perhaps that's what you're really asking.

It's not so much what I'm asking but what other people ask. and yes "what is your day job" seems to be the actual desired answer, since long tales of taiko classes rarely satisfies.

I don't have a day job, which gives me more time to do taiko classes, and work on other forms of art and projects that interest me. Aren't you jealous now?

or something?
