I was asked recently, as a topic of conversation over a group dinner, what I was addicted to. At the time I answered "Electronic and musical toys," but upon thinking about it, I think I'm more addicted to variety. And it's been an addiction that has adversely affected my life.

I am addicted to strategy games. Given the time and opportunity, though, I would be a gambler too.

Our society seems to reward those people who do one thing for a long time. We have so much selection and communication, that people have come to expect the best.

My addiction makes me an interesting person, but not a terribly successful person.

You might be interested in reading the book "Refuse to Choose", about different successful ways to be a generalist.

There's an implied "as opposed to those people who move around from thing to thing", and if so, I don't think that's true. I don't think it's been true since the mid-90s.
